The Queen's Cup Steeplechase

The Queen’s Cup is like no other sporting event in or around Charlotte. Each year, on the last Saturday in April, thousands head down to Mineral Springs (45 minutes south of Uptown) to watch jockeys in bright silks & their sleek thoroughbreds clear 4+ foot jumps over a beautiful rolling course. And they come prepared -- with their big hats, loud prints, folding chairs, badminton sets, nerf footballs, and coolers packed with 6 hours worth of liquid sustenance.

This is no place for amateurs.

Mudroom Makeover

Finally converted from a mid-construction nightmare to a finished space for hot chocolate, muddy Wellingtons, and wet paws.

Each frame contains an image of a Labrador Retriever, sourced from antique English dog books and vintage post card collections.

From Royal Wedding to Charlotte Symphony

Charismatic & oh-so-British Christopher Warren-Green, in his second season as Music Director of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, enjoyed worldwide acclaim conducting the London Chamber Orchestra during this spring's wedding of the Duke & Duchess of Cambridge.  He has been 'musically acquainted' with HRH Prince Charles for over 30 years (performing at countless royal events throughout, including the Prince's wedding + the Queen's 80th birthday party) and, together with the Abbey's Master of the Choristers, provided counsel to Wills & Kate throughout the planning process.

Last night, Warren-Green and the CSO opened their 80th season with a fabulous all-Russian program. The concert featured Croatian pianist Martina Filjak (in a stunning iridescent moss green gown), making her CSO debut with Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1. It was a wonderful evening full of amazing performances -- the kind of cultural experience Charlotte cannot afford to lose. And while the Symphony is currently facing significant financial challenges, I'm hoping last night's full house was a strong indication that it will be around for many years to come.

Remodel, Interrupted

In early 2006, I bought an 'as-is' 1920's colonial in Charlotte, North Carolina with great enthusiasm and a strong desire to make it my own. By late 2006, I was completely over plumber rip-offs, electrician no-shows, cabinetmaker flake-outs, plaster dust, dicey handymen, paint disasters, and plain old shoddy work. Starting a new job in a new city, while at the same time acting as my own general contractor, was too much. I threw my hands up, said 'enough', and left large pieces of my house incomplete (see Kitchen & Mudroom, below).

Fortunately, 8 months in London living in hotels and an antiseptic corporate apartment had a reinvigorating effect. Since returning, my house has been a proper hive of activity. I've purchased wallpaper & fabrics & rugs, sent furniture to be reupholstered, hired a painter, and -- after 5 years with a gaping hole above the range -- installed a hood.

It may not seem like much to you, but to me it feels like a pretty good start.

India

It's been forever, I know. But when wrapping up an international finance project, going on extended holiday, packing up & moving countries, starting a new job, and getting a house back in order, time does fly. So here's what's new -- meet India (more formally, Thimble Farm's India Ink, daughter of Shadylake's Southern Dixie Buddy & Flint River's Georgia), my 11 week old black Lab. She likes long walks, the UPS man, small rocks, and electrical cords.

She dislikes nap time.

What's New?

I'm returning to the U.S. on 4th of July week-end with something new. Here's a little hint.

Can you possibly guess?

Lisa in Lonny

A friend of mine (I'm happy to say), the terrifically talented Lisa Sherry (of Lisa Sherry Interieurs) is featured in the latest Lonny. Although based in North Carolina (you may know her from her amazing pop-up shop in Charlotte, Mixology), her style is out of this world fabulous.

Spicher's Mermaids

The March issue of Country Living features the Pennsylvania home of Kolene Spicher. I first discovered Kolene many years ago on Nantucket, where her murals grace the interiors of a few of the finest private shingled homes on the island, and her original artwork is showcased at Nantucket Country Antiques. Her whimsical ships, lighthouses & sailors are the perfect complement to any design inspired by a classic New England aesthetic. I love her pieces so much, I currently carry her prints (including the fabulous mermaid pictured in the bath, above) @ estate (Slate Interiors Charlotte).

Design & Doughnuts in Charlotte

2 ultra-chic designistas, Lisa Sherry & Susan Simpson (who also happen to be fabulous friends of mine), have a very cool thing going on this weekend. If you run away screaming from sterile High Point showrooms and love that crazy mix of disruptive design + well-curated vintage, pull on those yoga pants & 3 dot tees and get yourself over to 307 West Tremont ASAP.

This morning, Porcupine Provisions is frying up doughnuts, with a shot of java on the side.
Honestly, sister. What are you waiting for?

Scoop

Yes, it sounds like Eddie's coming to Charlotte, and a skinny blonde birdie also told me he'll very likely be hosting a super fun event @ Interiors Marketplace (Post & Gray's sister store) the evening of November 4th with Jaithan... I also heard mention of a book, with the possibility of a signing.  Exciting, no?

Guess who's idea that was?

Bald Head Island

The beach house of Lisa Sherry, a Charlotte designer {and dealer @ Post and Gray,} is featured in the current Charlotte Home & Garden. White, wheat, clean lines, Atlantic ocean. Heaven.

During

{See also, Before} Carolina weather's been lovely and my team of painters has made great progress. Prep is nearly complete, priming has begun. I've initiated my hunt for a large pair of vintage planters and started thinking about front door colors.

I love the whimsy of the Novogratzes' Great Barrington colonial...

{via O at Home}

but not sure I'm brave enough for color.

Grateful Growers Farm

Grateful Growers is a small farm in Lincoln County, North Carolina that focuses on producing food in a conscientious manner. The owners raise a menagerie of animals, including Tamworth hogs, Delaware chickens, Blue Swedish and Khaki Campbell ducks. Grateful Growers does not use added hormones or antibiotics, and the finished product is completely free of fillers, preservatives, nitrates and MSG.

I came to know the Farm through the launch of their newest venture, The Harvest Moon Grille, a 'food cart' just outside my office in uptown Charlotte that serves delicious, fresh food all made from scratch with locally-grown ingredients.  While the menus change weekly {and locations change daily}, here's an idea of the wonderful fare Harvest Moon Grille offers working Charlotteans...

Pasta Salad - bowtie pasta with mixed fresh veggies and a homemade vinaigrette dressing.
Tasso Reuben - Grateful Growers shaved tasso ham, braised collards and swiss on grilled Nova’s rye bread.
GG Country Pate - a slice of a loaf of finely ground pork blended with pistachios + cherries served on a Nova’s roll with housemade mustard sauce.
Tofu Salad - finely chopped firm tofu with carrots + onion in a mayo-based dressing served on a roll from Nova’s.
Scrapple with Eggs - Ground smoked sausage folded with polenta and baked into a loaf.  We serve a slice of this topped wth scrambled eggs and mirepoix (sauce of carrot, celery, onion + tomato).
GGQ - slow-roasted Grateful Growers pork shoulder served on a Nova’s roll with Lexington-style {aka the BEST} bbq sauce.

And to wash it all down, Uncle Scott’s Root Beer, an all-natural soda locally made in Mooresville, NC.

Delicious!

Amelie, the bakery

Charlotte, North Carolina's historic arts district {NoDa} is home to Amelie's, a most delightful French bakery. Inside its doors, the sights and smells are amazing. You won't know where to turn first...

But eventually you will find them, the fruit ties, twice-baked croissants, classic macarons...

With a Sunday Times, any of these, and a cup of the best brewed coffee this side of Seattle (sorry Dean & Deluca), you'll be in heaven.
